About Prof. Shyamal Kumar Pabi

Prof. Shyamal Kumar Pabi, a senior professor in the Department of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering at IIT Khragpur has carried out pioneering research work in the field of development of nanostructured materials, atom probe diffusion measurement, molecular dynamic simulation and experiments on nanofluids and mechanism and kinetics of phase transformation in materials. Professor Pabi has guided about 20 Ph.D. students and numerous M.Tech and B.tech students and published more than 125 research publications in peer reviewed journals. A few of Professor Pabi’s significant research achievements are reporting the nucleation of martensite and the occurrence of allotropic transformations in Nb-Al and Ni-Si solid solutions induced by mechanical alloying for the first time, breakthrough in lower temperature consolidation of bulk tungsten components and development of a new W-based alloy with excellent sinterability and extreme oxidation resistance, introducing a new computer simulation method called ‘Iso-Concentration Contour Migration (ICCM) method’ for predicting the diffusional transformation kinetics (1979), modifying the ICCM method in 1998 to relate the mechanical alloying kinetics in miscible systems with the melting temperature, formulating a new versatile molecular dynamics- stochastic model for nanofluids etc. A Humboldt Fellow and recipient of prestigious Materials Research Society of India (MRSI 2001) Medal. Professor Pabi has served in various professional organizations, such as President of the Material Sciences Section of the Indian Science Congress Association (1997-98), Chairman of the 63 rd Annual Technical Meeting of the Indian Institute of Metals, 2009, Council Member of the Indian Institute of Metals (2008-2010), Visiting Professor in the school of Materials Science and Engineering at the Seoul National University, South Korea and Guest Scientist in the University of Saarlandes, Germany.
